Astronomers prepared tables of trigonometric functions (especially for triangles on a sphere) from ancient times. With the introduction of the printing press, and the rapid decrease in the cost of paper, tables of trigonometric functions became widely available – sometimes as advertising giveaways. More precise tables were computed using a wide range of calculating machines and early electronic computers.
