The controversial practice of resolving personal disputes between gentlemen by dueling is explored in this exhibit. Displayed are letters of challenge, weapons, rules of conduct, and portraits of prominent duelists—Andrew Jackson, DeWitt Clinton, Thomas Hart Benton, Henry Clay, Aaron Burr, and Alexander Hamilton. Also on view are cartoons and writings of those who protested the practice.
