- Founded in 1978 by coach Neal Henderson, the Fort Dupont Ice Hockey Program is the nation’s oldest minority youth hockey program. Since its inception, the program has trained out of the Fort Dupont Ice Arena in the largely African American Southeast quadrant of Washington D.C. The Fort Dupont program has been the model for other inner-city based hockey programs across the country. The program's mission is to provide total training for all participants and to provide educational purpose, discipline, and self-esteem.
- Description
- A March 2007 issue of USA Hockey Magazine with Neal Henderson and Fort Dupont players on cover. The players and coaches are dressed in full uniforms and were all standing looking up towards the camera. Near the top center of the group, Neal Henderson is featured standing and has a yellow box around his head. Black and yellow text near the bottom reads [A Washington Monument]. Small black text in the bottom right corner reads [Neil (sic) Henderson Has Been Teaching Hockey Skills And Life Lessons To Generations of D.C. Youth]. The interior consists of hockey articles and advertisements. The Fort Dupont team is featured on pages 16-22 and consists of details about the team, the program, and Henderson. The article also includes images of the team. The back of the magazine has an advertisement for Warrior hockey gloves.
