- A. Stanley Rand (1932-2005), was a herpetologist specializing in frog communication. In 1964, Rand was appointed a Biologist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama. From 1974 to 1979, he served as Assistant Director at STRI, and in 1979 was named Senior Biologist.
