Ontario Lakers Champs 1991 Trophy

Anacostia Community Museum

Object Details

Caption
This trophy appears to have been awarded on behalf of the Ontario Lakers youth club to the champions of a 1991 basketball tournament in Washington, D.C. The Ontario Lakers were founded in the 1960s by Walter C. Pierce, when he transformed an empty lot into a baseball field with its own team, ‘because we were a bunch of kids who had nothing else to do.’ The team quickly developed into a source of local pride, as they were active participants in their Adams Morgan neighborhood, planting a garden in 1972 and starting a recycling campaign in 1982. They sponsored the Ghetto Invitational basketball tournament, bringing together other inner-city teams in a show of athletic excellence. The Ontario Lakers created an environment where young people could find constructive leadership in their community and transform the urban landscape, and this trophy is symbolic of the team’s role as champions for social change in sport.
