Object Details
- Donor Name
- Ensign U S N John B. Bernadou
- "Late 19th century. Silk gauze. The two panels here are folded to a point at the top and sewn to form a single paneled ribbon. Geumbak or gold embossed, inscriptions and seven circled dots, symbolizing the chilseong (the seven stars of the Big Dipper), decorate the ribbon. The inscriptions read: su bugwi (long life, blessings, wealth and nobility), and the seven stars are believed to have amuletic power. The purple ribbon is reserved for royal children. It is tied to the hair plait at the nape of the neck, letting the ribbon hang down the back. Bernadou Field Notes 147 "... ribbon made fast to the end of the plait with which the hair is done up. The characters signify 'long life, riches be bequeathed.' The circular device contains seven dots representing the seven stars of the Dipper. They are supposed to insure the wearer's having many children." Collected in Seoul. Ref: Hough Korean Catalog p. 448; Bernadou Field Notes 147" [from: "An Ethnography of the Hermit Kingdom: The J.B. Bernadou Korean Collection 1884-1885", Chang-su Cho Houchins, 2004, number 23]
