Church (his teacher), Sanford Gifford, Eastman Johnson, John F. Kensett, Frederick Law Olmstead (landscape architect), Bayard Taylor (writer for the New York Tribune and author), Launt Thompson, John Q.A. Ward, John F. Weir, and Worthington Whittredge. He includes visits to artists' studios and social engagements such as concerts, theater, dinner parties, and lectures in the company of his friends or with his wife, Gertrude. He describes numerous sketching trips in the Catskills and the Maine woods with fellow artists and their involvement with the Century Club and the National Academy's Council. McEntee also describes his work, family life, transactions of paintings, and continuous financial troubles.
