- This folded letter was sent from Charleston, South Carolina, to New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 24, 1864. It is from John Hincks to his sister Lida. The letter refers to the previous instructions for communication. It makes specific reference to the Hilton Head exchange post.
- The Union army, which recaptured New Orleans on April 24, 1862, required all mail coming into the occupied city to pass through censor stations. Shown is one such example of a Flag of Truce letter, which had been enclosed in an outer envelope that is no longer present.
