- In a career shortened by tragedy, New York Yankee catcher Thurman Munson (1947-1979) achieved more than most who ever played the game. Named American League Rookie of the Year in his first full season in the Majors (1970,) Munson would go on to appear in seven All-Star games, receive three Gold-Glove Awards, win two World Series (1977,1978) and be honored as the American League's Most Valuable Player (1976.) Munson's importance to the Yankees was recognized by his teammates, who named him captain in 1976: the first player on the club to be given the title since Lou Gehrig in 1935.
- In 1979 Munson died when a plane he was piloting crashed. His number 15, which can be seen written on the inside of the helmet, wa retired by the Yankees.
