Object Details

Description
Born in the Philippines, Ruby Ibarra comes from a musically gifted family, and her years in the Philippines were described to be full of song and soul. In 1991, Ibarra’s family eventually moved to San Lorenzo, California—not far from where some of America’s most famous West coast rappers had once been based. It was here that Ibarra began writing at the age of thirteen and built a following in the U.S. upon releasing videos on YouTube in 2010 and a mix tape in 2012. Her influences range from Francis M Magalona, who was one of the fathers of hip hop in the Philippines, to the Wu Tang Clan, Eminem, Lauren Hill, and Mac Dre. Circa91, released in 2017, is Ibarra’s debut album and illustrates the mix of these influences. The songs on the album switch between English, Tagalog, and Waray. Each song tackles different contemporary issues through Ibarra’s use of sharp lyricism and rhythmic multisyllabic flow. Topics such as patriarchy, colorism in the Philippines, and challenges her parents faced as new immigrants can be heard in the songs on this album. Ibarra’s decision to rap in Filipino dialects as well as English is an intentional one. Ibarra is conscious of the music she creates so that it also serves her community.
