- Historical Note
- The Smithsonian magazine was created in 1970 with the aim of extending the Smithsonian Associates into a large national organization. As the chief benefit of membership in the National Associates, the magazine serves as a means of communication between the Institution and its constituency. Following the original instructions of the Secretary to publish material in areas in which the Institution is interested or might be interested, Smithsonian has covered a broad range of topics in science, art, and history. Circulation grew from 180,000 in 1970 to almost 2,000,000 in 1982. Edward K. Thompson served as Editor, 1970-1980, and as Publisher, 1974-1980. Joseph J. Bonsignore became Publisher in 1981 after serving as Acting Publisher in 1980. Donald B. Moser became Managing Editor in 1980 and Editor, 1981- . Ronald C. Walker became Publisher in 1991, serving 1991- .
