Content Description
The Roger Foley Garden Photography Collection contains thousands of 35mm slide, film transparency, and photographic images, dating from 1978 to 2006, of gardens, garden features, and flora photographed by garden photographer Roger Foley. The images document dozens of private and a few public gardens in the Mid-Atlantic region, New England, the Carolinas, and Texas. Many have appeared in articles and books highlighting a variety of garden topics. In some cases, Foley's work documents multiple examples of a landscape architect or garden designer's work. Roughly half of the collection is arranged according to specific garden, the other half by garden feature. Most images are identified with the garden owner and year photographed; some have fuller captions. Images documenting specific gardens are occasionally accompanied by related articles. The collection includes 'outtakes' or bracketed images that give insight into Foley's photo shooting process.
Restrictions
Access to original archival materials by appointment only. Researcher must submit request for appointment in writing. Certain items may be restricted and not available to researchers. Please direct reference inquiries to the Archives of American Gardens: aag@si.edu.
