- Isaac Taylor Headland was born on in Freedom, PA. In 1888 he graduated with an A.B. from Mount Union College He arrived in Beijing in 1890 as a Methodist missionary. Later he worked as professor of science at Peking University. His wife, Marian Sinclair, was a doctor who served as physician to aristocratic women in Beijing, including the Empress Dowager Cixi. Headland wrote extensively on Chinese history and culture.
- According to Freer's diary, Headland arrived in Detroit on September 28th and left on October 1st. Likely, Headland brought the paintings with him.

- Charles Freer purchased the two paintings in Detroit from missionary, educator and writer, Isaac Taylor Headland (1859-1942). In addition to payment for the two paintings, there is an additional voucher for travel from Pennsylvania to Detroit.
