- Doctor, missionary and diplomat Horace Newton Allen (1858-1932) lived in Korea in various capacities from 1884 to 1905. Allen wrote numerous books and articles about facets of Korean culture, history and current events. Allen's friendship with Emperor Gojong (1852-1919) enabled him to facilitate the establishment of medical facilities and closer diplomatic ties between Korea and the US.

- The purchase of the Allen collection was largely negotiated by Freer's business partner Frank Hecker while Freer was traveling in Asia. The collection is primarily composed of Goryeo celadons acquired by Allen while in Korea. There are also a few pieces from Chinese kilns.
