- Scope and Contents
- "In the layout of the Great Enclosure, everything was reduced to the scale of the individual. Even the most important and dramatic spaces, such as those beside the Conical Tower, were surprisingly restricted, allowing for small groups of people at most. Today a large part of the romantic attraction of Great Zimbabwe is its solitude and sense of mystery." [Garlake P., 2002: Early Art and Architecture of Africa; Great Zimbabwe and the Southern African Interior. Oxford University Press]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
