- The old city, inscribed on the World Heritage List as "the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa," was founded in the 14th century and it contains many fine examples of Swahili architecture. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon was on assignment for Life magazine and traveled to Africa from August 18, 1959 to December 20, 1959.
