- Scope and Contents
- This series includes photographs, oral histories, and menus documenting Asian American food-service businesses. Materials were collected between 2020 and 2022. Asian Americans own and/or operate a range of food-service businesses in the greater Washington, DC region. These businesses serve a large and diverse clientele, introducing new flavors and expanding palates one dinner-plate or carry-out package at a time. Businesses represented include legacy restaurants that have served diners for decades; new establishments carving out a place in the market; take-out or carry-outs that provide tasty convenience; and alternatives such as ghost kitchens, which offer delivery-only meals without a storefront. These restaurants and other food-service institutions operated by Asian Americans serve not only as sources of physical sustenance, but also as sites of community, placemaking, and cross-cultural connection.
