Berlin. Russian War Memorial -- not far from Brandenburg Gate in the Tiergarten
Object Details
- General
- The Russian, or Soviet, War Memorial was built in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. Constructed with stone reclaimed from the nearby ruins of government buildings, the memorial commemorates the Soviet Union's war dead, particularly the 80,000 soldiers who died during the Battle of Berlin in April and May 1945. It stands in the Tiergarten, a wooded park decimated during the war, which has subsequently been restored.
