Wurzburg, ancient castle. Note Rainbow Div. sign on wall
Object Details
- General
- The Marienberg Fortress has been a landmark in Wurzburg for hundreds of years. During the bombing of Würzburg by the Royal Air Force on 16 March 1945, significant parts of the fortress were destroyed by fire caused by incendiary bombs. Reconstruction commenced after 1950 and was finished only in 1990. The "Rainbow Div." (a crude version of its insignia appears in the foreground of the image) was the 42nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army National Guard and captured Wurzberg between April 2-6, 1945.
