- General
- Mr. and Mrs. James A. Thomas commissioned Ellen Shipman to design the landscape for their estate, called Homeside, in White Plains, New York around 1936. Shipman designed several gardens including a flower garden, cutting garden, and rock garden, in addition to architectural features such as the walls, terraces, steps, gates, and a tool house, greenhouse, and additions and alterations to the main house. Her gardens included a fountain and pool with perennial borders, and bulb, shrub, and tree plantings. She also changed the entrance drive and added screen plantings between it and the garden walls.
