Greenwich -- Achelis Garden
Object Details
- General
- Frederic G. Achelis, president of American Hard Rubber Company in New York, and his wife, Helen Bruff Achelis, built up their estate on Round Hill Road in Greenwich, Connecticut beginning in 1919. Harrie T. Lindeberg was hired to design the home, garage, and gardeners cottage. The 2 1/2 story brick house was built of brick and limestone. Ellen Shipman designed the landscape and gardens on the property's 12.5 acres. The gardens were laid out in a terraced design, and included a formal garden, flower garden, seating areas, and a wild garden with paths throughout the property. The plantings were in Shipman's typical lush style and blended into the surrounding landscape. The house was razed in 2007. Persons Associated: Mr. and Mrs. Frederick G Achelis (former owner); Ellen Biddle Shipman (landscape architect); Harrie T. Lindeberg (architect).
