Groton -- Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture
Object Details
- General
- The Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture, Gardening and Horticulture for Women, located in Groton, MA, opened in 1901 under the direction of Judith Eleanor Low. The first school of its kind, Lowthorpe prepared women as landscape architects and opened a profession that was dominated by men at that time. In 1929, the school changed its name to the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture and in 1945 merged with Rhode Island School of Design, becoming a Department within the Division of Planning. The 17-acre campus included meadows, orchards, greenhouses and gardens, and that offered students practical applications of their studies. The gardens on campus were largely the work of the students and reflected the naturalistic style of English landscape gardens and cottage gardens of the Edwardian-era and the more formal Italian landscape designs, which were both taught at the school. Landscape Designer, Ellen Shipman was an advocate for women in the profession. She acted as an advisor at Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture for Women and even hired some students to work at the all-woman office Shipman ran for over 35 years. Shipman also promoted women in horticulture by featuring the student's designs of gardens for the campus in her lectures.
