Stamford -- Hillandale

Smithsonian Gardens

Object Details

General
It is possible that this was one of the houses located on the Hillandale estate of Iphigene Ochs and Arthur Hays Sulzberger. Records at Smith College show that landscape architect Alice Recknagel Ireys worked on this property between 1964 and 1984, and Molly Adams wrote "Sultzberger" [sic] on the back of two of the proofsheets in the series (there are four proofsheets in all, two of which are duplicates). The house shown is definitely not the main estate house at Hillandale, which features 23 rooms and 20,000 square feet. Moreover, the suburban appearance of the street and sidewalk shots on the proofsheets is inconsistent with the rural, wooded setting of Hillandale. The images in this series show a colonial revival style house with a small patio garden bounded by a low stone wall. Grass and then flagstone walkways appear to lead from this garden up flights of stairs to a terrace on a higher level. Several specimen trees including holly and white birch appear in other images.
Persons associated with the garden include: Alice Recknagel Ireys (landscape architect, 1964-1984) and Iphigene Ochs and Arthur Hays Sulzberger (former owners).
