Sands Point -- Anderson Garden

Object Details

General: This garden, designed by Alice Recknagel Ireys, complemented a contemporary house that was situated along Long Island Sound. The house was built on the site of a previous one destroyed by fire and was focused around a Norway maple that had survived the blaze. A creative use of rocks, water, and plantings gave a naturalistic Japanese feel to landscaped areas adjacent to the raised deck/terrace. A stone patio/terrace with ample seating provided a view across what appears to have been a swimming pool to the Sound, with its complement of small boats. Elsewhere, lawns and shade trees evinced a more conventional approach to design.
