- Biographical information includes certificates and diplomas, passports, and wills. The item pre-dating Thompson's birth is a family document: the marriage certificate of Samuel Cogswell and Sarah Williams. Other information about the Thompson family is included in Thompson's diaries and those of his mother and wife, found among the writings (Series 4). Some printed material (Series 6) concerns the career of his brother, composer Randall Thompson, and other items mention his wife.
