Aerial photograph of canals in Topsail, NC

National Museum of African American History and Culture

Object Details

Photograph by
David Soliday, American
Caption
NC – Near New River. This image is intriguing to all historians since few know the exact history of these canals. Most suspect drainage. Possibly some rice in very early years. This is Top Sail NC. African made canals is a subject I'd like to investigate and photograph further. –Description from photographer, David Soliday.
Description
A digital aerial photograph of remnant rice fields by Alligator Bay and Topsail, North Carolina. Mill Creek can be seen flowing from the image’s bottom edge into Alligator Bay, which occupies much of the middle of the photograph. Numerous vestigial canals are visible along the creek as well as the bay’s northern and western banks. On the southern bank, closest to the top of the image, several buildings as well as North Topsail Beach can also be seen, separating the bay from the Atlantic Ocean.
