- Description
- The Postal Service commemorated the 150th anniversary of the US Naval Academy with the issuance of a 32-cent stamp in a pane of 20, on October 10, 1995 in Annapolis, Maryland.
- The academy, founded in 1845 as the Naval School at Fort Severn in Annapolis, Maryland, was reorganized in 1850 as the US Naval Academy. It was established as an institution of higher education to train, educate, and motivate young people for a career in the naval service. At the outbreak of the Civil War, it was moved to Newport, Rhode Island, and remained there during the entire war period. Today, the US Naval Academy offers men and women undergraduate degree programs and professional training in a variety of fields.
- The US Naval Academy stamp was designed by Dean Ellis of Amagansett, New York. Ashton-Potter (USA) Ltd. produced the stamp in the offset process.
