See the large American flag presented to merchant Capt. William Driver of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1824 by family and friends. He dubbed the flag "Old Glory," and the name was adopted and used to describe all American flags. This same flag was kept hidden by Driver in Nashville, Tennessee, during the Civil War, and was raised over the city in 1862 when it was captured by Union Troops.
