This exhibition explores the U.S. government's use of documentary photographs in the 1930s to inform people about government programs. More than 80 rarely seen photographs of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Works Progress Administration (WPA), Civilian Conservation Corps, the Farm Security Administration, and the National Youth Administration are displayed. The photographs were taken between 1933 and 1941, by government photographers, including Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and Russell Lee.

Also on view are periodicals showing how government and commercial magazines used these photographs. These include rural electrification, mechanization, unemployment, and environmental conservation.
