Artifacts and archival materials donated by Michio and Aveline Kushi document their work as advocates of the macrobiotic vegetarian lifestyle. Macrobiotics, literally meaning "big life," is a spiritual, nutritional, and therapeutic system that focuses on the interrelationship of mind, body, spirit, and society. Macrobiotic principles are Pan-Asian in origin, dating back several centuries; the practice became very popular in the United States beginning in the 1960s.
