A Statement from the Smithsonian Regarding Hirshhorn Incident on Aug. 20, 2012

A security officer at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has committed suicide as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting took place in a non-public area of the museum and no members of the public were harmed. The museum has been evacuated and closed to the public. Law enforcement officials are on the scene and are investigating.
