Smithsonian Associates presents an exclusive interview with producers, writers, directors and actors Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass Thursday, May 10, at 6:45 p.m. in the Ring Auditorium at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. In conversation with NPR’s Linda Holmes, the Duplass brothers will share their perspectives on the joys and frustrations of brotherly collaboration, how they learned to capitalize on each other’s strengths and how they succeeded in Hollywood on their own terms.

The Duplass brothers have made their mark in the world of independent film and television on the strength of a quirky and empathetic approach to storytelling. Drawing on their new book Like Brothers (Ballantine), they trace a professional path that took them from a childhood spent wielding an oversized home video camera in the suburbs of New Orleans to making a breakthrough short on a $3 budget to finding their feature Baghead at the center of a Sundance bidding war.

The brothers will also explore how their closeness sabotaged their youthful romantic relationships, the jealousy each felt when the other stole the spotlight as an actor (Mark in The League, Jay in Transparent) and the challenges they faced on the set of their HBO series Togetherness—namely, too much togetherness. Wild Wild Country, a new Netflix documentary series they executive produced, is their latest project.

Ticket prices for the Smithsonian Associates’ presentation, which include a pre-signed copy of their new book Like Brothers, are $55 for general admission and $45 for Smithsonian Associates’ members. For tickets and information, the public may call (202) 633-3030 or visit www.smithsonianassociates.org.
