National Museum of Natural History Displays “A Photographic Journey from the Wild to the Walls of the Smithsonian”
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History will exhibit the winners of the “Nature’s Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards,” an exhibition that will include 48 striking photographs taken from the original 135-piece collection. The photos will be on display March 30 through Jan. 6, 2013.
Winners of this prestigious competition were judged by a board of experts in photography, science and conservation. More than 20,000 images from 47 countries were reviewed before these select few were chosen. These photographs were taken by professionals, amateurs and youth. A total of 15 category winners will be displayed:
- Animal Antics, African Wildlife and Small World
- Art in Nature, People in Nature and Power of Nature
- Conservation, Wildlife and Endangered Species
- Birds, Zoos and Aquariums and Youth
- Landscape, Ocean and Plant Life
These awards are dedicated in memory of the accomplished photographer and conservation advocate, Windland Smith Rice. Visitors can learn more about the species featured in many of the photos through the Encyclopedia of Life at eol.org/info/naturesbest2011.
