National Museum of the American Indian in New York To Open Mili Kàpi Cafe Feb. 14
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustave Heye Center in New York will open the Mili Kàpi Cafe Feb. 14. Mili Kàpi means “give me some coffee” in the Native language of the Lenape people, the original inhabitants of New York City. The new cafe will be located on the museum’s second floor and run by Restaurant Associates.
The cafe’s food and beverage selections were curated by Freddie Bitsoie (Diné [Navajo]), the museum’s executive chef. The cafe will offer hot and cold beverages and light casual fare—sandwiches, salads and sweets—highlighting ingredients indigenous to the Americas. The cafe will serve coffee from Stumptown Coffee Roasters.
The Mili Kàpi Cafe is the first time the Smithsonian is offering food and beverage service in the museum. Entry into the museum is free, so diners do not need to visit the museum’s exhibitions to enjoy the cafe. The cafe will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
