Me-Wuk Indians Perform at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian
The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians from Tuolumne, Calif., are bringing the museum’s official holiday tree to Washington, D.C. To celebrate, the museum invites the public to a performance of the Me-Wuk Indian dancers in the museum’s Potomac Atrium on the first level, Monday, Dec. 5. Members of the tribe will conduct an opening blessing at 11:30 a.m. followed by a performance of traditional dancing and singing. The performance will repeat again at 3 p.m.
The public is invited to help decorate the holiday tree with homemade ornaments provided by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Also, renowned artist Julie Parker, whose work is featured in the Smithsonian’s collections, will demonstrate traditional basket-weaving throughout the day.
