Scope and Contents
This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.
Original caption reads, "Carvings by Ewale Nnale of Ezi Akputa compound, Mgbom Village. Left to right: igri mask with bulging eyes. Bulging eyebrows on this kind of mask seems to have become common in recent years. Did not exist in the 1950s. Then a beke or mbeke (white man) mask, another igri with bulging eyes, a mma ji, two acali masks, and an okpesu umurumu (frighten children) ugly mask." [Ottenberg field research notes, January 1988-February 1988].
