This photograph was taken by Dr. Simon Ottenberg while conducting field research at Afikpo village-group, southeastern Nigeria, from January 30, 1988 to February 5, 1988.

Original caption reads, "Various works of Oko Abagha. Large oil painting of an omume title holder at Afikpo. This is the highest Afikpo title a man can take, only taken after going through an elaborate series of previous titles. It is very expensive. The title-taker is dressed up as in taking the title.,or after taking it." [Ottenberg field research notes, January 1988-February 1988].
