Perls Galleries records, 1937-1997. Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.
Arrangement note
The negatives are numbered and arranged according to the gallery inventory numbering system. Many negatives of Calder's artwork were separated, probably for the catalogue raisonne, and are filed at the end of the numbered series. Index cards can be found at the end of the series. Researchers should note that frame ranges given in the container inventory do not list missing numbers which occur throughout the series in multiple frame ranges.
Collection Rights
The Archives of American Art makes its archival collections available for non-commercial, educational and personal use unless restricted by copyright and/or donor restrictions, including but not limited to access and publication restrictions. AAA makes no representations concerning such rights and restrictions and it is the user's responsibility to determine whether rights or restrictions exist and to obtain any necessary permission to access, use, reproduce and publish the collections. Please refer to the Smithsonian's Terms of Use for additional information.
Scope and Contents note
Nearly all of the negatives in this series depict artwork from the Perls Galleries inventory. There are at least two negatives depicting Klaus Perls with Alexander Calder in the Perls Galleries (see Box 55, Folder 1). There are two sets of index cards providing access and cross-references to the gallery's numbering system. The blue and green cards list artwork by artist name, geographical region, or African tribe, C-Z - the letters A and B are missing. Yellow cards list artwork by photograph number. The entries on the cards also cross-reference the gallery's stock numbering system.
Collection Restrictions
This collection (except for Series 2: Negatives) is open for research. Access to original papers requires an appointment and is limited to the Archives' Washington, D.C. Research Center.
