Docent Programs
Docents are volunteer teachers who provide group learning experiences in the
form of museum tours, demonstrations, or instruction in special activity areas.
Museum Information Desk Program
Volunteers in this program work at a museum information desk where they are on
the front lines interacting with visitors of all ages on a daily basis.
Telephone Information Program
Volunteers in this program handle public inquiries from around the world on all
aspects of the Smithsonian—its exhibitions, activities, administrative
functions, and services.
Behind-the-Scenes Volunteer Program
Offers challenging alternatives to more public-oriented volunteer activities.
Opportunities are generally available in: archives; libraries; administrative
offices; conservation laboratories; and curatorial divisions related to art,
history, and science collections.
Special Support Programs
Offer volunteers an opportunity to enhance the museum experience for visitors in
various ways, from assisting with hands-on activities to providing staff with
administrative support.
