Particularly from the 1890s, increasing numbers of children went on to study in high schools. There they might make geometric models or study the use of computing devices like the slide rule or, much later, the electronic calculator. Women also learned to operate business machines, including ones that did arithmetic. They also came to teach not only in high schools and teacher’s colleges but in universities.
