Women in World War I Smithsonian American Art Museum Archives & Special Collections

The objects highlighted below are held in the Archives and Special Collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and represent only a preliminary survey of those holdings that are related to women in World War I.  Please also keep in mind that we have a very broad definition of what constitutes women's involvement in the war.

All of the items in this section are photographs of works of art, including paintings, medals, and memorial sculptures, that show women in a variety of roles during the war. Some of these representations of women, particularly the ones of memorials, are allegorical.
