Comitia Americana Medals Francois Louis Teissedre de Fleury

De Fleury was a French nobleman initially refused a commission by the American Congress in spite of his successes in the Royal Army. He quickly, however, proved his valor and was appointed captain in the Continental Army Engineers. Anthony Wayne chose Colonel Fleury to lead one of two columns in the Assault on Stony Point. The Frenchman was the first of the American forces over the wall, leading his men with only bayonets, and the person to cut the British colors from the fort. The unfailing courage of de Fleury and his brilliant execution of Wayne and Washington’s tactics at Stony Point earned him Congressional recognition in the form of his medal. Like that of Anthony Wayne and John Stewart, de Fleury’s actions at Stony Point are memorialized on his medal.
