- Description
- In an interview recorded in Houston, TX, on October 23, 2008 for the National Portrait Gallery’s Exhibition “Presidents in Waiting,” President George H.W. Bush reflects on his experience leading up to and during his vice presidency. President Bush served as President Ronald Reagan’s Vice President, 1981–1989. Reagan’s decision to choose Bush as his running mate came as a surprise, but offered President Bush experiences and skills that were indispensable to his own presidency. Bush talks extensively about the position of the Vice Presidency. He remarks that the position is not one of power, it exists to support the President. As Vice President he made sure never to try and grab power from Reagan and always acted as a champion of the President rather than a rival. Bush ends his interview by speaking to the idea of legacy, and instead of speaking to his own he defers to history, stating, “Let the historians decide.” This interview is a part of the National Portrait Gallery Audio Visual Special Collection (AV.2008.EXH.2). Video produced for the National Portrait Gallery by VideoArt Productions.
