Object Details

Donor Name
National Museum of American History
BODY OF THE PARKA IS MADE FROM 90 MUSKRAT SKINS. HOOD RUFF OF WOLVERINE AND WOLF FUR. ORNAMENTED WITH STRIPS OF CARIBOU FUR SEWN IN GEOMETRIC PATTERN OF DARK BROWN AND WHITE ON SHOULDERS, UPPER FRONT UPPER BACK AND AROUND BOTTOM. TASSELS MADE OF WOLVERINE THROAT PIECES WITH WOLF AT THE TIPS, EXTENDING FROM SHOULDERS, MID-FRONT AND MID-BACK. COMPLETELY LINED WITH COMMERCIALLY PRODUCED QUILTED COTTON PRINT CLOTH. FRONT ZIPPER OPENING. ACCORDING TO DR. STEPHEN LORING OF THE ARCTIC STUDIES CENTER, "THE FANCY PARKA IS WORN ONLY ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS; IT IS A TRADITIONAL INUPIAQ FORM THAT HAS BEEN MADE FOR MANY YEARS. THE RUFF PROTECTS THE FACE FROM THE FREEZING ARCTIC WIND--UNLIKE OTHER ANIMAL FURS, WOLVERINE DOES NOT ICE UP WITH CONDENSATION FROM HUMAN BREATH; THE FANCY WOLF IS ADDED FOR GOOD LOOKS." MADE IN 1997 BY NORA ANN REXFORD-LEAVITT, INUPIAQ MASTER-ARTIST FROM BARROW, ALASKA.
Stored in Pod 4 oversize whole unit. Advance arrangements are needed for access.
