- This poster was commissioned by NASA's Goddard Spaceflight Center to mark the 1975 launch of the Viking mission to Mars, which included the first Mars landers. It was illustrated by the space artist, Jon Lomberg, an artistic collaborator of planetary scientist Carl Sagan. The artwork, which includes a blue viking longship and the silhouette of a Viking lander against a topographical globe of Mars, connects planetary exploration to the history of human exploration on Earth.
