- Description
- Landscape sketch showing a view of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, looking westward from an elevated point southeast of the Acropolis. The immediate foreground consists of a grassy hill that descends from right to left. In the middle distance at center, a windmill with stucco walls is perched atop a gentle hill, while, in the middle distance at right, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is shown with its ruinous colonnade. Above it at right, the Parthenon is visible atop a dark and rocky Acropolis. Across a grassy valley or declivity, the Philopappos Hill is shown with the Philopappos Monument noticeably positioned on top of it. In the background, a luminous setting sun hangs above a purple, rugged mountain range while the sky is clear and blue-green.
