- During the spring of 1915, Theodore Roosevelt testified for eight days during the trial Barnes v. Roosevelt. The former president, who had accused William Barnes Jr. (1866–1930) of being corrupt, was facing charges of libel. The trial made headlines for six weeks straight, culminating in Roosevelt’s acquittal and increased popularity with the American people. Barnes, meanwhile, never regained the nation’s trust, and his career as a politician effectively ended.
- After the British ocean liner Lusitania was sunk on May 7, 1915, Roosevelt advocated for war preparedness and sent three of his sons to a military training camp. He also criticized President Woodrow Wilson’s decisions pertaining to World War I, which at the time won him no favor. In the end, though, many viewed Roosevelt as having been right about the war, and had he not died in 1919, he would have been the most likely presidential candidate for the Republican Party nomination in 1920.
