Object Details

Slater, Kelly
Description (Brief)
Champion surfer Kelly Slater (b. 1972) used this Channel Islands board to win the Rip Curl Pro tournament at Bells Beach, Australia, in April 2010. Later that year, the thirty-eight-year-old won an unprecedented tenth Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship. Slater chose this particular board to donate because of its special significance; he had a bad first event at the Bells Beach competition and was injured going into the second event. There were rumors that he was getting to old to surf but using this board he was able to win the event and turn his season around eventually winning his record setting 10th title. Slater has been surfing since he was a teen and is the only surfer to win the ASP World Surfing championship eleven times with five consecutive titles during the years 1994-1998. Slater is the youngest to win the title as a twenty year old and the oldest at age thirty-eight making him the most successful champion in the history of the sport. Slater continues to surf and is dedicated to preserving the oceans.
