- Artist Lucille Malkia Roberts’s Strathmore spiral-bound watercolor sketchbook provides insight into her materials and process. A price tag on the signed cover shows it was purchased at Lipman’s Art Shop, a local artists’ supply store and exhibition space in Silver Spring, MD that operated between 1957 and 1983, for $3.68. On the first page, Roberts experiments with script by painting the word Flight twice in blue watercolor. The artist plays with color on the next page, bleeding deeply pigmented drips of blue, magenta, and purple with orange, yellow, and green. The final page is cut in half along the diagonal and features very faint pencil lines. It is possible Roberts used this sketchbook while studying with renowned artist and muralist Hale Woodruff at Howard University between 1976 and 1985. The few remaining sheets in this sketchbook reveal clues about how Roberts utilized her materials while practicing her craft.
