- Summary
- Atop a tall stone shaft stands a Civil War soldier, in military dress, holding a rifle in front of him with both hands. The stock of the rifle rests on the ground. At the top of the shaft directly below the soldier, a frieze contains leaves and four shields. Each shield contains the letters "US" below three stars. Further down the shaft, another frieze contains eagles and dates. The shaft is set upon a base containing commemorative panels honoring American wars and curved relief panels depicting military scenes at each corner.
- Beginning at the southwest, or left front corner, and moving counter-clockwise around the base, the first relief depicts a soldier leaving his wife and three children. One son stands, looking towards his parents, as two other children hold onto their father. A ginkgo tree and cabin are in the background. On the south, or front side, a Civil War commemorative panel contains an inscription and a medal. The southeast corner relief panel shows a group of nine men, four in the foreground, including a Yankee soldier with rifle, a man, perhaps Abraham Lincoln, holding a flag, a sailor with saber, and a drummer.
- The east panel honors the Spanish-American War and contains a wreath. On the northeast corner, a cavalry charge is depicted. A central figure rides a galloping horse, as a foot soldier runs at the horse's hindquarters and a fallen soldier lays at the front. The north panel, commemorating World War I, contains an inscription and an eagle. The northwest corner relief panel depicts an infantry charge, showing three men and a drummer, a fallen man, and a wounded comrade who is seated. A soldier in the background holds an American flag. The west panel is a memorial to the Mexican War. The inscription and image on this panel are no longer visible.
